Place: Saint-Tropez (Var)
Participants: Adults
Workcamp description:
The pre-Vauban citadel in Saint-Tropez, whose keep and walls are listed as Historic Monuments, is a haven of peace overlooking the town and its famous bay. For more than 20 years, the commune has entrusted us with the restoration of the Citadel's walls, structures and paths. This summer, your worksite will be continuing the work of creating a low masonry retaining wall, following on from the one built in 2024, and also repairing a completely collapsed corner wall, still along the same lines as the work carried out in 2024. So, stone and lime mortar will be the order of the day, with an uninterrupted view of the sea before you jump in!
Work programme:
Building technique: Traditional lime mortar masonry
Event during the workcamp: The European Heritage Days are the must-see event for history and architecture lovers!
Accommodation:
You'll be staying at a campsite in Gassin, near Saint-Tropez. You'll sleep in mobile homes, in rooms shared by two people. You'll have access to all the comforts of the campsite and your accommodation: one shower per mobile home, the campsite's toilet blocks, fully-equipped kitchens and plenty of storage space in the bedrooms. The campsite has a swimming pool and many other leisure facilities.
Workcamp life:
During your stay, you will be supervised by 2 activity leaders. The technical supervisor will teach you all about traditional building techniques, and the educational supervisor will help you organize your daily life and leisure activities.
Adults spend around 30 hours a week working on the site. Work on the site takes place in the mornings, starting early because of the summer heat. The afternoons, evenings and weekends are devoted to outdoor and discovery activities, providing relaxation and pleasure. Two vehicles are made available to the supervisors to organize outings.
You will take it in turns to prepare meals as a team. You'll take it in turns to prepare meals as a team, giving you the chance to share recipes from your own region and sample countless specialities from other parts of the world. If you're already a “chef”, that's perfect; if you're not... Get cooking!
On all our sites, we want our volunteers to play a real role in their stay, so we invite them to work together to propose the activities and events of their choice, in keeping with the values that the association wishes to uphold.
Some ideas for excursions: Visits to the seaside resorts of the Côte d’Azur but also into the back country of the Var to see the La Verne Monastery, the Fairy Bridge in Grimaud, La Garde Freinet, walks in the Maures valley, along the coastal path or the discovery of the Hyeres salt flats.
A little bit of history:
Saint-Tropez, its port, its beaches, its police station and, of course, its Citadel!
The Citadelle has been enthroned over the town for more than 400 years, but our teams of volunteers have been working for more than 20 summers to enhance and restore it.
A pre-Vauban bastioned fortification, it remains one of the only monuments of its size on the Var coast. In 1583, mention is made of the first building on the hill known as ‘des moulins’, then in 1607 the Donjon was completed, this thick hexagonal tower encircling a vast inner courtyard.
Today it houses the Maritime History Museum, where visitors can learn about the famous seafaring explorers, as well as the daily lives of the men and women who lived in the town and its port.
